Château d'Argouges
An avenue of century-old lime trees leads visitors to Château d'Argouges, and all are impressed with their first glimpse of this splendid, classical château offering spectacular views over the surrounding countryside.  The parish of Argouges appeared during the reign of King Henri II, the  Plantagenêt King of England and Duke of Normandy who died in 1189.  This ancient church did not disappear, however, and lies between the château and the river near the former presbytery -- both on the estate of the château.   The château itself  is a fine example of 19th century French architecture set in a lovely two and a half acre park with carefully tended gardens that tempt guests to sit and enjoy the views or take peaceful strolls.  There is even the opportunity for a game or two of croquet!   Once inside the château, one soon discovers why it has been awarded four epis for comfort and charm.  Château d'Argouges provides guests with five carefully appointed and comfortable en suite rooms, a billiard room, a library and a salon for relaxation, reading or watching television.   Location is everything, and Château d'Argouges is positioned but a few kilometers from Omaha Beach, famous for the D-Day landings of American troops, and the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer.  For those wishing to visit these sites, as well as the Caen Memorial and other Normandy locations associated with World War II, the château is an excellent base.   The charming city of Bayeux is only minutes away for visits to see the extraordinary tapestry depicting the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and William the Conqueror's ascension to the throne of England.   Near the château, guests will find not only historic sites and monuments, but some of the finest beaches -- unspoiled and sandy -- on the channel coast.  The Calvados region has so much to offer visitors including exceptional seafood in its many fine restaurants, more traditional fare in Bayeux, and, of course, endless opportunities to enjoy Normandy's world renowned cheeses and cream.  One must remember, too, that this is the département of Calvados where the apple is king.  Calvados liqueur is produced here, as well as cidre:  apple cider with a low alcohol content.  Desserts and other dishes using apples must not be overlooked such as Tarte Flambée, Tarte Tatin and Porc Rôti aux Pommes.    Sophie and Thibault Jeanne, the charming proprietors of Château d'Argouges,  are eager to welcome guests to their home, provide information on all the local attractions, supply some historical background regarding their château and this part of Normandy, and make each and every visitor to the château feel perfectly at home.  We hope you will decide that your next visit to this historic Norman coast must include a few nights or longer at Château d'Argouges.
