| Often, many outstanding photographs of a property are available, and we don't know where to begin to make a selection for our web site. The photos of Château de La Barre created such a dilemma: photos of beautiful grounds and exquisite rooms. But, we narrowed our choices down to those we thought would best represent this historic château situated in the seductive Sarthe département of the Pays de la Loire. As a guest at the château you may find yourself astonished that there are 100 acres of gardens, woods and meadows surrounding a home that has been in the same family since 1421! The Vanssay family originated in Brittany and eventually settled in Vancé in the county of Maine in the ninth century. In 1066 members of the family were present when William the Conqueror fought the Battle of Hastings. The family has remained in the Maine for the past 1150 years. In 1421 the beautiful manor house came into the Vanssay family by marriage. The name "La Barre" referred to its early designation as a court of justice and toll collection center. In the 16th century, Marin de Vanssay fortified and expanded his domain, in the 17th century a wing was added, and in the 18th century the interior was refurbished. The château was fortunate enough to remain intact during the French Revolution. Early in the 19th century some of the Vanssays followed Napoléon as far as Russia, and later, about 1870, the Count de Vanssay became the private secretary of the Count de Chambord, the last legitimate heir to the French throne. Since that time, Château de La Barre has been substantially restored, blending many centuries of architectural styles. This home was always well cared for and loved -- a place where the history of the home and family are irrevocably entwined. Today's château guests will find themselves in sumptuous guest rooms, at breakfast buffets of grand proportions, and enjoying dinner at the family table under the watchful eyes of ancestors whose portraits adorn the walls. This is no ordinary accommodation but a warm and welcoming family home. The Count and Countess de Vanssay are not only eager to invite you into their home, but they will go to great lengths to ensure you discover all that their château and the Sarthe has to offer. This is definitely one opportunity you won't want to miss! |
