The castle's history involving the poet is interesting.  Guillaume de Salluste, Lord of Barthas, was born in nearby Montfort in 1544, and he was the descendant of a family of nouveau riche tradesmen and recent nobility.  It was in 1565 that his father purchased Château du Barthas.  Guillaume renovated the castle upon his father's death, married and lived there with his wife and four daughters.  It was then that he became deeply involved in his poetry career and was discovered by the queen of Navarre, Jeanne d'Albret, becoming court poet and diplomatic emissary to Huguenot Henri IV of Navarre, the future king of France.  Although not desiring to participate in war, he was in battle with Henri in the French Wars of Religion and was wounded mortally in the battle of d'Ivry in Normandy.  He died at Coudons on August 28, 1590 at the age of 46.  Today, the château is comfortable for twenty-first century life, but it retains its fascinating Medieval ambiance. 

Guests enter the château grounds through a grand gate and proceed down a tree-lined drive into a romantic courtyard.  The octagonal fifteenth century tower creates a first impression long remembered. Once inside the château, guests will be amazed by the grandeur of the rooms, 12- and 15-foot high ceilings, monumental fireplaces and period details.  Seven bedrooms are available in the château and several sitting rooms and salons offer places for gathering and relaxation.  Central heating, a spacious and well-equipped kitchen, and an historic dining room add to the reasons for renting Château du Barthas for a family gathering or special event with your friends. 

The courtyard off the Grand Salon is perfect for taking meals en plein air, and a covered terrace at the back of the château is a fine place for relaxing in the shade. There is also a chapel dating back to the thirteenth century.  The décor of the château is rich with fabric covering the walls and fine chandeliers in many of the rooms.  Guests will appreciate the summer salon and bar area overlooking the courtyard, the reception room which can accommodate dinner for up to sixty people, and the loft on the second floor that can be used for entertaining or as an eighth bedroom.  Without a doubt, Château du Barthas offers everything one could want in a weekly rental: history, country charm, the comforts of home and convenience to all the attractions that make southwest France one of the favorite destinations of travelers from around the world.

Vicinity:  Tennis, golf, swimming at the lake, horseback riding, cycling, fishing, climbing. Day trips to Carcassonne, Lourdes, wine country of Gaillac, Pyrénées mountains, Canal du Midi, and Toulouse (Airbus production facilities, architecture, museums, churches, shopping) as well as the Gascony capital of Auch, picturesque Agen, the village of Sarrant which has summer festivals, Cloisters of Moissac, Armagnac distillery in Condom. The nearby town of Mauvezin is ideal for daily shopping, post office, boulangerie, etc.  Many daily markets in the region.

From Paris by Train from Gare Austerlitz to Auch via Toulouse, about 6 hours 40 minutes.

From Paris by auto:  Take the A10 to Orléans, A71 to Vierzon, A20 to Montauban. Take the D928 out of Montauban, cross the A62,  and continue through Beaumont de Lomagne to Mauvezin.  Turn left onto the D654 for about 4 kilometers and the château is on your left at kilometer marker 59km

From Auch by auto:  take the N124 to Aubiet, turn left onto the D928 direction Mauvezin.  Take the D654 out of Mauvezin direction Cologne for 4 kms.  Château on left in the forest.

From Toulouse by auto:  take the N124, pass L'Isle-Jourdan and exit at Gimont direction Mauvezin on the D12.. Turn right at Mauvezin onto the D654 for about 4 kilometers and the château is on your left at kilometer marker 59km
