| Definitely a dramatic and powerful group of buildings, the Manoir de Bellauney is not your typical French country house. Instead, this impressive structure dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries, is now the home of Monsieur and Madame Jacques Allix-Desfauteaux and a unique resting place on your journey through France. It is a true Norman manor house, situated near the splendid coastline of the Cotentin Peninsula of Normandy. A former manorial home and in the same family for more than a century, it was built on the ruins of a monastery destroyed by the troops of Edward III in 1346. During World War II, the home became the quarters of the commander of the German occupying forces. Sensitively restored by its present owners, today it is an inviting chambres d'hôtes that retains its historical qualities. A warm reception is given visitors by their host and hostess, Monsieur and Madame Allix-Desfauteaux. The guest wing of the residence offers its own private entrance and a cozy salon for relaxation. The bedroom accommodations are on the first floor and are enchanting, each decorated in a different period in French history and all open over the park with its palms, centuries-old trees and meadowland. From the Medieval and Louis XV guest rooms to the most interesting 19th century Normandy-styled room, the furnishings, fabrics and comfort are all sure to please. Guests may take advantage of the many footpaths throughout the grounds. For those inclined to more energetic pastimes, a game of pétanque might be appealing or they are welcome to borrow some cross-country bikes to explore the region. Families or groups of six people might enjoy a self-catering holiday; the Allix-Desfauteaux offer their Gîte Margency just a few miles north of the Manoir. Utah Beach is only about 33 kilometers to the east. Exploring the historic villages along the coasts (both east- and west-facing) of the peninsula is pleasurable and easy from your home base at Manoir de Bellauney. Time spent at this refined family home will be enchanting and very special, and guests will be sure to take home memories to cherish for years to come. |
