Périgord is one of the most popular travel destinations in France,
and for good reason. It is overflowing with delightful towns and
hilltop villages, lovely rivers, prehistoric sites, excellent cuisine,
good weather, and so much more. All this makes the location of Le
Prieuré du Château de Biron all the more wonderful.
Biron castle itself, with an interesting and tumultuous history, stands on a high point in the village of Biron just across from Le Prieuré. The vast castle, changing hands often between English and French, was owned by 14 generations of the Gontaut-Biron family (until the State took it over in the 20th century) and has historical ties to the nearby fortified market town of Monpazier built in 1284. The village of Biron is simply delightful and lies within the outer walls of the castle. The priory has been renovated to a high standard ~ most recently by its new owner, Elisabeth Vedier who has created exquiste and luxurious guest accommodations that are sure to entice you to stay! It is a large and historic yet intimate residence that invites you to experience its traditions and beauty. Its charming proprietors are dedicated to the priory and are continuing to update the guest rooms ~ and those fortunate enough to occupy them will find them simply beautiful as they all have a classic elegance. Spacious twin, doubles and a suite are waiting to welcome you, each with en suite bathrooms, some with Jacuzzi baths. The guest rooms have original fireplaces, beamed ceilings, panoramic views of the countryside, the medieval village and the château, as well as sitting areas where tea- and coffee-making provisions are provided. There is also a lovely apartment, fully self-catering, at Le Prieuré that has a private entrance from the outside. The cozy garden has a southwest aspect ~ the sunsets are spectacular. Guests will find exploring the surrounding countryside most enjoyable. There are many excellent restaurants, colorful markets and nearby shopping is a pleasure in the chic boutiques of Sarlat and Bergerac. Visits to vineyards and other attractions can be arranged for you by the proprietors. Wedding receptions after a ceremony at the Biron village chapel can be organized at Le Prieuré, or perhaps you would like to celebrate an anniversary at Le Prieuré. There are many special occasions to be enjoyed here, but we are certain that, whether you stay for a couple of nights, choose to spend a long weekend, or reserve a room or the apartment for a longer stay to explore this enchanting region, your time at Le Prieuré will be a special occasion in itself. |
