Château de Bournand

Come through this gate to experience a world of tranquil beauty and classical château life.   Château de Bournand  is an excellent base for exploring the wonders or the Loire Valley, from its grand châteaux and exquisite gardens to its array of vineyards.  Guests of the château, as well as visitors who come to enjoy the delightful Celtic gardens, appreciate the location of Château de Bournand -- only minutes away from  the Loire town of Chinon,  with its renowned château ruins,  and just south of the ancient Abbaye de Fontevraud,  burial place of many of the Plantagenet royals and Richard the Lionheart.  Giant sequoias over 225 years old can be found in the park, dearly treasured by the owners.

The village of  Bournand offers a patisserie, butcher shop, épicerie and a full-service restaurant, all a short walk from the château.  At the château, bicycles are available to rent for those who want to more actively explore the region -- a very popular way to see the valley as evidenced by other cyclists you are bound to meet along the lovely country lanes.  The château's history is colorful, some of it dating back as far as the 11th century, while in the 1600s it was destroyed by Cardinal Richelieu for the construction of his fortified town.  Later that same century, it was rebuilt using tuffeau ~ that lovely pale cream-colored Loire Valley stone taken from local caves.

Recently restored, the château, courtyard and manor house offer guests five bedrooms all with en suite bathrooms with showers.  Four of the five are full suites with queen size beds and private entrances from the gardens or courtyard, and two have fireplaces for the enjoyment of their occupants.   Breakfasts are luxurious and included in the room rates.  Use of a refrigerator, a gas grill for cooking outdoors, picnic areas with tables and umbrellas and the lovely park for relaxing or peaceful strolls add to the feeling of a home away from home.  Guests can avail themselves of a self-guided walking tour which identifies specimen trees throughout the park, and they will learn of the Celtic connection depicted in the Celtic gardens and a circle of 22 trees used by the ancient Celts as their calendar.  There is also a formal garden, a perennial garden, an herb garden, a rose garden, a fruit orchard and many statues and fountains.

For those who are seeking self-catering accommodations, the Carriage House was recently renovated to provide the utmost in modern comfort while retaining the charm of its past.    Offering two bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, a salon, dining area, fully-equpped kitchen and powder room, the Carriage House is rented by the week,  and  guests can take full advantage of the château grounds while enjoying a place of their own.  There is also the newly renovated Stone Manor House with two queen size bedrooms, a French country kitchen and so much more.  Guests of the Carriage House, the Stone Manor House and the château will love the swimming pool and pool house or enjoy games of croquet and pétanque.

Nearby, in addition to the châteaux of the Loire, visitors can take part in canoeing, horseback riding, golf, tennis or go antique shopping!  There is no lack of things to do near Château de Bournand.  Excursions into Tours, Saumur or Angers are easy day trips, and visits to troglodyte caves and museums are also worthy pastimes.  Winery visits provide an introduction to the up and coming fine wines of the Loire such as Chinon and Vouvray.  And, of course, everyone should experience an open air market while in the French countryside, many of which can be found near Bournand.  We hope you will consider this lovely château for your next stay in the Loire. You will be warmly welcomed and made to feel comfortably at home while experiencing a taste of château life that will create long-cherished memories.
