| Manoir de Caillemont is an imposing stone structure of historic significance. On the coast of Normandy, just opposite the Channel Islands, this 18th century manor house (dating from 1720) has rooms that reflect the period but are decorated with refined taste and modern conveniences. Take special notice of carved woodwork and moldings with various decorations such as ribbons, interlacing, arrows and quivers, masks and musical instruments. It is a charming and comfortable chambres d'hôtes whose host and hostess, Catherine and Eric Fouché, eagerly and warmly welcome guests. The location of the manoir is perfect as well ~ not far at all from the west facing Channel coast with easy access to resort towns and the Channel Island ferries. Today's Manoir de Caillemont is built upon an earlier house of which there is no longer a trace. The front, shown in the photo above, faces the courtyard and is without decoration, the builder opting instead for symmetry ~ the master's house in the center with wings at each end. Defined by centuries of history, more recently the manoir was occupied by German forces from June 18, 1940 until June 18 of 1944. It was actually their veterinary center, as the German army on the Cotentin used hundreds of horses. It was directed by a lieutenant who was also an equine veterinary surgeon from Hannover (an area of Germany renowned for its horses), thus any horses with health problems were taken to Caillemont. In July of 1944, General George Patton installed his troops nearby in Néhou in an apple orchard. General Eisenhower and his troops were accommodated there. The two generals came to St George and sent some soldiers to Caillemont to request one hundred glasses from which to drink champagne. In the courtyard, accompanied by military music, General Patton officially received General Eisenhower. Several days later, the attack on Avranches was launched. Another story of historical note concerns a refractory priest who hid in a tiny cabinet in the Suite Guernesey during France's Revolution for the abbot clandestinely exerted Catholic worship in this area during that time. Day trips to such towns as Villedieu-les-Poêles noted for being the copper ware capital of France, Granville for its casino, and Coutances with its charm and magnificent cathedral make this location perfect for touring the département of the Manche on one's visit to Normandy. Two spacious suites and two elegant double rooms are available to guests. Named for the Channel Islands, they are Suite Jersey with a lovely room and a salon whose walls are of rich 18th century paneling, Suite Guernesey with a queen bed, two twins and a salon, Chambre Aurigny which has handicapped access and accommodates three people in a double and single bed, and finally, Chambre Sark, offering a double bed in a cozy retreat accessed up a spiral staircase. Guests will enjoy the convenience of a "coffee shop" at the manoir where they can enjoy a light mid-day meal, and dinner is served in the dining room with advance reservations. Of course, it goes without saying that a delightful French breakfast awaits guests each morning! The history, charm and location of this exceptional manor house will fulfill the dreams of anyone who wants to experience a truly Norman holiday. |
