Château de Crazannes Deep in the heart of the Saintonge in the Poitou-Charentes region of western France, and only 280 miles southwest of Paris, there is a castle registered as an Historic Monument of France - it is Château de Crazannes. We can attest from personal experience that this château chambres d'hôtes is delightful from the moment one steps through the gates. The château is of monumental historic significance, the keep a medieval treat, and the cottage the ideal place for a family vacation. A secluded swimming pool with dressing rooms and showers makes a warm weather stay at Crazannes just perfect! Unique among our member properties, Château de Crazannes can provide a cozy room or suite with breakfast -- or guests can rent the Keep, the Cottage, the Château or the entire property! Combine any two of those buildings to meet your specific needs and requirements for that special vacation.
The Sitting room of the Keep
Appealing to visitors for its beauty and long, interesting history, Château de Crazannes is conveniently located near the Atlantic cities of La Rochelle and Royan, the vineyards of Cognac and Bordeaux, and twelve kilometers away from the 2000 year-old city of Saintes with its Roman amphitheatre and other notable architectural gems. If golf or horseback riding are your favorite pastimes, either is easily attainable when you are a guest at Crazannes. And, don't forget the aforementioned heated swimming pool!
Inspired centuries ago by the château's Marquis de Carabas, it was here that author Charles Perrault created the Count for his children's story, "Puss in Boots". Historically significant, the site held a fortress, chapel, keep and moat in the 11th century. The Chapel and Keep alongside the moat stand today -- a thousand years of history for visitors to experience. Below is
a photograph of the Chapel, at one time the centerpiece of the former
village of Crazannes which was on the site of today's château.
All that remained was this ancient chapel when the Keep and then the Château
were constructed. Today, the village of Crazannes lies in its 'new'
location, a few kilometers away. Comfort, a peaceful and relaxing
country atmosphere, luxurious and tasteful furnishings, modern conveniences
and a warm welcome await you at Château de Crazannes. And
be sure to visit the roof terrace of the Keep to relax with a cool drink
or to take in the incredible views all the way to the River Charente.
As impartial guests during our first visit to Château de Crazannes, we were inspired by the fine and distinctive architectural details, the tranquility of the park, the great care that has been taken to provide comfortable accommodations, and the warmth and friendliness of the staff. Today, with a couple on site managing the estate and tending to the needs of guests, some new amenities have been added: dinner can now be enjoyed at the château and groups of guests can have catered events. It is a perfect venue for a wedding and reception ~ the chapel is just waiting to host its next marriage ceremony! Please visit Château de Crazannes on our web site for more photos and details regarding its history and its splendid accommodations.
