has an allure so very different from the rest of France. Lush verdant
landscapes, wild heather-covered moors, and a dramatic coastline that seems
endless as it begins in the south near the Pointe de Bile and ends along
the Baie du Mont Saint Michel. Perfect little villages, grey granite
houses and delectable cuisine all come together in Brittany to offer visitors
something very special.
Also very special is le Manoir La Chaussée, not only for its incredible charm and comfortable accommodations, but it is perhaps more well-known for its spectacular gardens, Le Jardin Anglais, designed by Alan Mason, a leading English landscape designer. He took a 'ramshackle Breton vegetable plot and a forest of poplar trees' and created a casual English garden containing more that 20,000 varieties of plants, some which are exotic and quite rare. His garden at La Chaussée was the subject of a television series in Britain, so this property is quite famous! The château has its beginnings in the 11th and 14th centuries, having been improved upon throughout the centuries by many noble families. It is near a bridge over the River Vilaine, a place of strategic importance in times past. In World War II, it was the center of the French Resistance under the leadership of Marie Moquet whose family had owned the property for over 150 years. She made her home a safe haven for both Resistance fighters and escaping Allied pilots. There were unpleasant wartime occurrences at the bridge, and the loyal gardener of the manor, Celestin Poulain, was shot against the garden wall and is buried there. Sympathetically restored through the ages, the manor has retained its medieval charm and appeal, and so many of the rooms have been renovated to recapture their historical ambiance. There is the main manor house in two wings, a defense tower guarding the courtyard, and a separate Guardian' House ~ now a self-contained guest cottage offering a fully equipped kitchen, sitting room and massive upstairs bedroom. The Guardian House can accommodate four in a double room as well as two singles, perfect for a young family. The manor has five double guest rooms, one twin and two apartments, all with modern en suite bathrooms. Guest rooms are furnished with French and English antiques in a most tasteful and restful style. Guests will feel comfortable with the spaciousness and simplicity of the rooms. Common rooms in the manor are gathering places for those renting the property. Imagine yourself in the salon sitting in front of the massive stone fireplace. The salon has an ancient beamed ceilings and windows overlooking the Rose Garden. Step outside and enjoy the terrace overlooking the formal lawns and the lake. The dining room is as it would have been in the 15th century. There is a library which can be used as a conference room as it provides all modern communication technology. A Romanesque heated spa tub can be found in the converted barn buildings. It will accommodate twelve people and is of hand-crafted mosaics unique to France. The area around the manoir, located in the département of the Ile-et-Vilaine, is not only filled with places to visit and explore, but it is convenient to Nantes, Le Baule and Redon, all nearby, and short drives to Rennes, St Malo, Cherbourg, Caen and Le Havre. For those who enjoy sailing, kayaking, fishing or golf, this is the ideal location. |
