| The Indre-et-Loire département of central France is château country for it is here that visitors discover most of the famous Loire châteaux that have been part of France's incredible history. So, it is not unexpected that one would also find many privately-owned châteaux such as the beautiful Château de Détilly only 50 minutes by train from Paris, yet deep in the heart of some of the most beautiful French countryside. Dating back to the 10th century, the site was originally the location of a hunting lodge built in 954 by the Bishop of Tours. The chapel dates to the 13th century, replacing a more primitive one that had been consecrated in 1135 by the Archbishop of Tours. After religious wars in the 16th century, the present structure was built on the ruins of the old fortress. There has been sympathetic restoration over the years, always maintaining the original character of this most pleasant residence. The château is located between the rivers Loire and Vienne at the center of the Loire-Anjou-Touraine national park, the area known as the Garden of France. As guests arrive at the château they pass into the courtyard through an incredible XVth century arch with carved escutcheons, a listed national monument by the government of France. The château is lovely with 12-foot ceilings, long windows and walls covered with stretched silk tissue tondu. Beautiful, large period mirrors over marble fireplaces and fine oil paintings create an elegance appreciated by those who stay here. The château has central heating throughout, tapestries hung in the hallway and main staircase, and many extraordinary chandeliers. There is a stunning salon with a fireplace and large windows facing east and west, a library/card room with French doors opening onto the terrace and garden, a TV room, a sunny study with a desk, fax machine, printer, telephone answering machine, and dedicated internet line ~ and a single sofa bed, WC and bathroom with shower. This suite of rooms would be suitable for someone who preferred not to have a room upstairs. Guests will adore the elegant dining room, a sunny breakfast room that can seat up to 14 around the pine farm table in front of its massive stone fireplace, and a large and fully-equipped modern kitchen with a spacious granite work surface. The first floor (one flight up) is where four of the eight bedrooms are located. The bedrooms are spacious doubles with fine furnishings, fireplaces with marble mantles, all with en suite bathrooms with tubs or marble showers and a WC. There are four further bedrooms on the second floor: a double with its own en suite bathroom ~ it is often called the "Honeymoon Suite". This room has a lovely canopied bed, a walk-in shower and grand views over the countryside. There are also three twins that share a sixth bathroom. This entire floor can be closed off to form an apartment that can be let separately from the château. There is also a spacious multi-purpose room on this floor as well as a fully-equipped kitchen area. Aside from these wonderful accommodations in the château, guests will be drawn to the fine Coach House available for those seeking a place for additional guests or if a family would like separate living quarters. It is also ideal as a very comfortable residence for staff members who accompany a large group renting the château. There is a living and dining area, a sunlit conservatory and views to the gardens. One of three living room sofas converts to an extra bed. The kitchen is spacious and modern with recessed lighting, lovely ash cabinets and a large refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, electric oven and both electric and gas cook tops. The Coach House offers three bedrooms on the first floor, two with twin bed and one with a queen-sized bed (English king), a modern tiled bathroom with tub and overhead shower, and an additional WC adjacent to the bathroom. Most interesting from a historic perspective might be the château's chapel which was consecrated in the twelfth century. It is available to guests for weddings and Christenings and seats 60 guests for such occasions. There are endless special features to be found in Château de Détilly, and we could go on indefinitely. in Château: 5 double rooms all with en suite bathrooms,
3 twins sharing a bathroom. The château can accommodate
up to 17 guests. Included: twice weekly cleaning lady, linens
changed weekly, pool towels, daily gardener, garden produce, use of bicycles,
all utilities (heating the swimming pool is extra, charge by meter usage),
phone according to usage. One week
minimum rental between May 31 and September 13, 2008.
Apartment: When intercommunicating doors are closed, the double bedroom and 3 twin bedrooms can be let as an apartment accommodating 8 people. Large multi-purpose room with kitchen area provides an ideal self-catering holiday rental. Use of Orangery and pool are included. Coach House: In addition to the amenities listed above, there is also a satellite TV, a VCR for British, American and European tapes, full stereo system, telephone with intercom to the Château, a separate WC on the ground floor, a private garden and patio and barbecue. The Coach House can accommodate 7 guests.The renters of the Coach House can use the swimming pool and Orangery unless otherwise noted in the rental agreement. Weekly rate is € 1000, € 1200, € 1455 and € 1820 based upon seasons as noted below. 2008 Prices: Château from € 6900 to € 9840 per week, Apartment only from € 1150 per week, and Coach House only from € 970 per week. Prices depend on rental dates: Winter is November 1 until April 12 excluding Christmas and New Year; Low Season until May 31and from October 4 to November 1; Mid Season May 31 to June 28 and August 30 to October 4; and High Season June 28 to August 30, 2008. When renting château and coach house together, combine rates given. Weddings: Four wedding options are offered with supplemental charges for required event services. Security deposit required. Wedding organizer is available to help with wedding plans, as are clergy of various faiths. Inquire via above email address for details. Security Deposits: château only € 3000, château and coach house € 3400, coach house only € 400. Booking Deposit: 50% of gross rental rate is required as a deposit made at the time of booking. Upon confirming reservations, guests will be given a pre-arrival shopping list to indicate the provisions they would like for their stay. Also, traiteur (delicatessan/caterer) service is available with 4-days notice, and a list of some available items will be provided. Maximum capacity of property is 24 people.
