Château Forge du Roy

Constructed during the reign of King Louis XIV, the 'Sun King', the captivating Château Forge du Roy, on an estate of 184 acres, invites you to come for a week or more to enjoy the beautiful, historic Vézère valley with all its wonders including 147 UNESCO listed prehistoric sites.  The Forge itself is stunning and was originally built as a hunting lodge for the Marquis de Fleurac in 1680.  It evolved over the centuries from a forge, producing huge iron cauldrons for sugar reduction in the French Caribbean and cannons for Napoléon's army, to the very special place it is today ~ welcoming families, wedding celebrants, or groups of friends for a holiday in the heart of the Dordogne surrounded by historic towns, fine restaurants and myriad places for outdoor activities.

The château has ten luxurious guest rooms, en suite or with private bathrooms, to accommodate up to twenty guests in absolute comfort. Two ground floor bedrooms are wheelchair accessible.  Spacious salons invite relaxing or gathering for conversation, and a magnificent dining room creates the perfect ambiance for a formal dinner party.  The Estate Managers are never intrusive but are always available to answer their guests' questions or arrange something special.  Both the Forge and the Barn have fully-equipped kitchens, and the main kitchen has just been doubled in size with added lighting as well.  All linens and towels are provided, and there is daily cleaning service.

The outdoor amenities are quite exceptional as well:  a sparkling swimming pool and pool house, a boules court, table tennis and an estate that just begs to be explored.  Long walks and spur-of-the-moment pauses for landscape painting or photography are tempting, so bring your camera and brushes.  Perhaps most appealing are the 4-acre lake, stocked with trout and carp for fishing, and the lovely little River Manaurie flowing gently through the property.  Guests will be happy to sit around the fire pit or have dinner under the pergola on balmy evenings.

Château Forge du Roy is the ideal location for a small wedding ~ there are dozens of amazing backdrops for those romantic and treasured wedding photos.  The planning can be done by the bride and groom or with the help of the château's Concierge Service and wedding planner.  Either way, a wedding at Château Forge du Roy will be a stress-free and happy occasion for everyone to mark the beginning of a couple's life together.

So much can be part of your stay at The Forge including hot air balloon rides over the Dordogne and Vézère Valleys, day trips to nearby bastide villages including some of the 'Plus Beaux Villages de France', the region along the River Vézère with its many prehistoric sites including the Lascaux caves, and, of course, outdoor market days.  If you are renting the château as a self-catering property, visiting the markets for fresh produce, baked goods, fish, meat and cheese will make preparing those meals all the more enjoyable. Be sure to also take advantage of the kitchen garden (jardin potager) for organic fresh produce.  Of course, if you want meals prepared for you by professional chefs, arrangements can easily be made.

Château Forge du Roy is an excellent choice for family getaways or vacation get togethers with a group of friends.  Your hosts can arrange wine tastings at the château, help with outings such as canoeing, horseback riding, playing a round of golf, or even truffle hunting.  All you have to do is book your week or two to live in the lap of luxury while soaking up the local culture and enjoying this beautiful and historic region of southwest France.
