| A visit to Burgundy can be a dream come true. Its lovely countryside, rich cuisine and fine wines make it an important and rewarding destination for travelers to France. Nestled in the green landscape of the département of Nièvre and not far from the city of Nevers is the elegant and refined Château du Four de Vaux. A five-hectare estate surrounds this fascinating building, enlarged in 1840 by the Baron Denis Durosier de Magneux de Vepré, a quite eccentric character who built the five towers to lock up his numerous mistresses to conceal them from the newer arrivals! Later owners, such as the Vyau de Vaudreuil family from Fontenay, bred hunting dogs for parties pursuing wild board and roe deer. The château has a 19th century exterior appearance, but the interior suffered much under German occupation during the Second World War and then later when it was converted to a school. Fortunately the principal architectural details remain intact, such as the intricate woodwork, parquet floors in point de Hongrie style, free stone, spiral staircases, murals and the unique towers which contribute to the château's romantic atmosphere. The grounds are romantic as well, with a lovely ornamental pond, chapel and century-old trees. For guests enjoyment there is a children's play area, pony enclosure and vegetable garden. The owners have restored to château sensitively, and the five en suite bedrooms are richly decorated in warm color tones with comfortable and appealing furnishings. A library and lounge are available for the use of guests, and breakfasts are taken in a beautifully appointed room with original woodwork and ceiling moldings. Dinner is served at the château as well with advance reservation. If you would like to rent the entire château, a kitchen and oak paneled dining room will also be made available. The history of growing grapes for wine in the Centre Loire region has its origins in medieval times, and the history of wine making is part of every town and village in the region. AOC labels of quality include the wines of Pouilly, Sancerre, Menetou Salon, Quincy, Côteau du Giennois and others. Especially interesting is the Oenological Escapade offered by the owners of Château du Four de Vaux. This includes two nights stay with breakfast, a four-hour wine appreciation and tasting experience, finished with a Burgundy buffet for six to twelve people and is a very exciting evening. Guests will learn about vines and wines, enjoy tastings, and be guided through the entire event by a professional oenologist who will initiate each person in the art of aromas and 'tasting' wine with the eyes, nose and mouth to determine balance and harmony. A stay at Château du Four de Vaux is more than a night or two lodging; it is a journey into history, wine making and Burgundian cuisine, all enjoyed in a remarkable, charming countryside château where everyone is given a warm and friendly welcome. |
