Villa le Goëland

High on a plateau overlooking Biarritz,  with a 180°  panoramic view of the Gulf de Gascogne stretching from Spain up the Landes Coast,  is a delightful chambres d'hôtes, Villa le Goëland.   Built in the 18th century, Villa le Goëland was first known as Villa Montebello and later Villa Ravize.  It was transformed into a manor house, including the addition of two towers, in 1903 and renamed Villa le Goëland.   The Duc de Montebello's family inhabited the villa until the current owner's grandfather purchased it in 1940. This grand guest house,  located on the Plateau de l'Atalaye between the Pays Basque and the Atlantic, holds a prominent oceanfront location with commanding views much appreciated by guests.  Only 50 meters from the best and most beautiful beach in Biarritz, Villa le Goëland  is a much admired classic residence.

The Basque Coast of southwestern France is renowned for its friendly people, intriguing cuisine, beautiful seaside towns and unique charm.   Situated in the département of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques -- an area from the Spanish border north to Biarritz and Bayonne and inland as far east as Pau -- Biarritz shares this region with quaint villages, the dramatic Pyrénées mountains, hilly green landscapes and misty lush valleys and, of course, the warm and wonderful Atlantic beaches.  Today a famed resort,  Biarritz was but a small fishing village during the Middle Ages,  and boats would set off into the rough seas to go whale hunting.  In the mid-1800s Napoléon III and the Empress Eugenie discovered Biarritz and made their home in the city.  Those who wanted to be part of their social circle came here from all over Europe in droves, and the city became known as ' the king of beaches and the beaches of kings'.

The region around Biarritz offers vacationers everything from golf and scuba diving to horseback riding and paragliding.  Spas abound, and night life includes concerts, the casino and the cinema.  Nearby there are many sites and museums devoted to prehistory.  In addition to the convenience of these wonderful area attractions, guests of Villa le Goëland  will enjoy the villa's salons, one of which will soon become a billiard room, and the terraces with breathtaking views from its perfect location right on the Atlantic shore.   Three beautifully decorated guest rooms with large en suite bathrooms await visitors -- all the rooms,  including the bathrooms,  have views of the sea!   Each has a king-size bed, but individual single beds can be substituted if requested.  Chambre Goëland has a large private terrace and Chambre Ravize a small terrace. Delightful breakfasts of fresh fruit, yogurt, breads and pastries, juice and coffee can be taken on the terrace or in the dining room.   The Villa's in-town location makes it ideal for shopping, trying your luck at the casino, enjoying fine restaurants or local bistros,  and participating in cultural activities.  Your friendly host and hostess, Paul and Elisabeth Daraignez,  will make you feel most welcome at their extraordinary and captivating retreat by the sea in the southwestern corner of France.
