| Sumptuous
and elegant are the two best words to describe the magnificent Château
du Grand-Lucé. Once owned by the French government, the château
now has an American owner who recently completed a seven million euro restoration
of the château and its impressive gardens. This is a most luxurious
château, called one of the "most precious elements of architecture
of the French Enlightenment" by the Architect of French Monuments.
Duke Jacques Pineau de Viennay had the château constructed in 1760 on the grounds of a tenth-century castle based solely on written instructions, as he was living in Strasbourg at the time. Those plans are housed in the National Archives in Paris. During its early days, the château welcomed Voltaire, Diderot and other luminaries of the Enlightenment. The owner's influence was able to prevent damage to the château during the French Revolution as were subsequent owners during two World Wars, sparing it the destruction suffered by so many historic buildings. Visitors will appreciate the fine paneled rooms, parquet floors and the salon painted by the 18th century master, Jean-Baptiste Pillement. Today, the entire estate is listed as a French National Landmark. Set on 74 acres (30 hectares) of exquisite gardens, meadows, woodland and a lake, guests will have ample opportunity for outdoor experiences. Follow the trails through the woods, visit with the swans and geese at the lake, swim in the heated pool or just sit poolside to relax. An added benefit is that the château borders a small town where guests can enjoy authentic French village life at one of three cafés, or they can visit one of the bakeries, stop in at the newsstand, or pay a visit to the historic 12th century church. As those who have visited this region of France know, the Sarthe is an incredibly interesting, peaceful and beautiful place. The château interiors are exceptional. Adorned with museum quality art and fine antiques, and appointed by interior designer, Timothy Corrigan, who is also the owner of the château, each room will take your breath away! Mr Corrigan has designed major residences for European and Middle Eastern royalty, as well as celebrities in the entertainment industry ~ and this château is no less grand or elegant than those. Architectural Digest (which will soon have a feature about Château du Grand-Lucé) and In Style magazine have both commended Mr Corrigan as 'today's tastemaker' for his ability to create exceptional comfort and livability in residences of great style and elegance. Eleven spacious and beautiful guest rooms, all with their own en suite bathrooms, await guests at the château. Several inviting salons, a dining room, fully-equipped kitchen with dishwasher, pantry, library / TV room, and two powder rooms are on the ground floor. An elevator takes guests from the garden level to the ground floor and then to the first floor, as do two staircases, where there are nine bedrooms. One staircase continues to the second floor, where there are two additional bedrooms. All ground floor rooms have fireplaces. For the convenience of guests, there are three washing machines and three clothes dryers. If you have a group of friends or family looking for the perfect vacation getaway ~ to a place that offers sublime luxury and classical French style ~ or if you are looking for the ideal location for a very special event such as a wedding or anniversary celebration, Château du Grand-Lucé has it all! This stunning property awaits you and your loved ones in the easy-to-reach Sarthe département of the Pays de la Loire. |
