Villa Iratz-Aldéa

At the southwestern most corner of France south of Biarritz and near the beautiful resort town of Saint Jean de Luz, is Villa Iratz-Aldéa at the top of Socorri Hill overlooking the village of Urrugne.  This fine residence was built in the 1920s in the Basque architectural style with strong Spanish influences, especially seen in the furniture.

The Villa is offered for rent by the week and provides ten bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, a sun-filled dining room with large windows overlooking the gardens, and a spacious and comfortable salon.  Aside from the lovely park, the outdoor amenities of Villa Iratz-Aldéa include a tennis court and a swimming pool.  Within walking distance is the chapel of Socorri, enjoyed by the local people who come to pray, rest or take in the amazing views.

There is much warmth and appeal to both the villa's exterior and its lovely rooms.  The bedrooms are beautifully furnished, decorated in soothing colors and with discriminating taste.  The house is very suitable to a family gathering or a group of friends; the two apartments are ideal for two couples with two children.

Below the Villa is the village of Urrugne whose Eglise Saint Vincent should not be missed.  Built in the 11th century under the patronage of Saint Vincent de Xaintes, the first bishop of Dax, the building was rebuilt in the 16th century in Renaissance style.  It may appear to be fortress-like as it has high walls, straight buttresses and slits, but it is a listed building and its interior is quite lovely, especially the fluted columns supporting the organ balcony.

At the gateway to Spain,  only 20 kilometers from bustling Biarritz, and between St Jean de Luz and Hendaye, Urrugne is located perfectly for tourists, photographers and those interested in the history of this region, but it is most popular for those who enjoy golf and surfing.  Look toward the mountains and you will see La Rhune, the highest peak (910 meters) in the western Pyrénées, and the GR10 hiking route will take you up its slopes.  Urrugne has the distinction of being located between the coast with its high cliffs and the mountains. But for those interested in the beach, an exquisite sand beach is located at Socoa, on the edge of Urrugne and faces the town of St Jean de Luz.  Another interesting pastime is to watchthe Basque game of pelota in Urrugne ~ major organized matches are attended by very enthusiastic large crowds.

If you've ever been to the Basque region of southwest France, you most likely are aware of the numerous charming villages, the robust Basque cuisine (especially the fresh seafood which is in abundance) and the immaculate, colorful homes that define Basque architecture.  Villa Iratz-Aldéa is one of those, and anyone who decides to spend a week or two at the Villa will come away with the best of memories.
