| Perched
on a hilltop in the foothills of the French Alps is the striking yet somber
Château de Méouilles overlooking the long and lovely turquoise
Lac de Castillon. Built by the Knights Templar in the twelfth century
to protect the surrounding lands against marauding Saracens and occupied
by a well-established Provençal family, the d'Ailhaud's, from the
fourteenth century, the château still stands guard over the rolling
green landscape below. Château de Méouilles is near
the famous Route Napoléon and on the border of the old Savoy province,
an area that had witnessed many battles until eventually being subdued
by King Louis XIV near Colmar les Alpes.
Today, the château sparkles in the brilliant Provençal sunlight under a crisp, blue sky, and at 900 meters altitude, it enjoys a cool and comfortable climate making it the ideal vacation spot at any time of the year. The area is known as 'the Secret Alps of Provence', rich with nature's beauty and not far from France's Grand Canyon, the Gorges du Verdon. The region is famous for its fossils from prehistoric times (protecting it by official decree from modern-day development) and its hot sulphur springs, such as those at Digne-les-Bains, making it the ideal destination for those interested in prehistory as well as those seeking a 'cure'. The château sits on eleven acres of land which it shares with a superb Romanesque chapel and nearby statues of Saints Peter and Paul. The château itself is divided into three apartments, each with a fully-equipped and spacious kitchen. Apartment Saint Paul has one bedroom, a bathroom, a kitchen and a salon and is suitable for four people. Apartment Saint Pierre has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a salon and kitchen and accommodates six people. Completed in 2006 is Apartment Saint Jean with two bedrooms, three bathrooms, a kitchen, salon, and TV room and will comfortably house eight people ~ and the exquisite details such as onyx wash basins, a marble tub and canopy beds will help to make one's stay just superb. For those who would like to rent the entire château, they will enjoy a total of five bedrooms, six bathrooms, three kitchens, three salons, and the TV room to accommodate a maximum of 18 people in three separate apartments. This is an ideal arrangement for groups of friends or a large family. The region and this captivating château will ensure a memorable and relaxing stay in France's picturesque and enchanting southeast. |
