A wise lodging choice for visitors to this part of France is Château de la Poujade, a bright and spacious 17th century chartreuse  (charter house) - the largest one in the region - and a listed Historical Monument.  Guests will appreciate the peace and quiet while being only a few kilometers from all the important sites and attractions.  La Poujade was once at the heart of rich vineyards, and sits on the high slopes of the Black Périgord. For those familiar with the Dordogne département, it is divided into four distinct areas known as the Périgord Blanc, Périgord Vert, Périgord Pourpre, and this, the Périgord Noir.  The Black Périgord is known for its deep gorges beneath smooth cliff faces, the cave paintings of early man, the River Vézère winding through many prehistoric sites, and the wonderful towns of Montignac, Les Eyzies and Sarlat.

The park surrounding the château was planted in 1896 by Lord Greenwell and his wife Emma Maire, great-grandparents of the current owner.  Her bedroom upstairs has a distinctive bow window.  Emma was a painter, and her paintings can still be seen on the walls of the orangerie. There are eight grand cedars at the opening of the courtyard, a 300 year-old climbing vine adorns the east terrace under a fine balustrade, and a regal  300 year-old chestnut tree near a large terrace dominates the view over the Dordogne valley.  Meadows surrounding the château ensure its rural charm, and those who love the outdoors will certainly enjoy the Zodiac swimming pool, the beautiful views and the château's expansive park.

The main building is the home and heart of the estate, while stables, an orangerie and cellars occupy the two wings. The interior has dramatic vaulted ceilings, columns, magnificent Louis XIV fireplaces and authentic charm that guests will find both cozy and intriguing. The interior is exquisite, warm and welcoming.  No detail has been overlooked, and the décor and furnishings are completely in keeping with the architecture and period of the château.  Five spacious and comfortable bedrooms plus two smaller rooms are offered for fourteen people (adults and children) and there are cribs (cots) for two infants.

The living areas are impressive and inviting.  The grand dining room with its vaulted stone ceiling and classic fireplace is the perfect place for an elegant dinner.  The country kitchen is has a massive fireplace, golden stone walls and lots of space for creating great meals. A pale blue lounge offers a soothing and relaxing environment, and its vaulted ceiling creates the perfect acoustics for playing the piano or listening to music. A professional chef works daily or on request.

Vicinity:  Only 20 minutes from Sarlat and 30 minutes from both Bergerac and Perigueux.Tennis, golf, canoeing, equestrian pursuits.  Prehistoric sites at Les Eyzies de Tayac, Lascaux II, the towns of Sarlat, Montignac, Domme, and Trémolat are nearby.  The city of Périgueux (Musée d'Art et d'Archéologie du Périgord, Musée Gallo-Romain Vesunna archeological site, the Cathedral of St-Front) and the city of Bergerac (twelfth century Carsac de Gurson Church,  la Maison du Vins in the 16th century Récollects Cloisters, Museum of River Transport,  the Costi Sculpture Museum) are both ideal for day trips.  On the route to Bordeaux and St Emilion's prestigious wineries. The River Dordogne and its villages, and the Vézère River and the Vézère Valley whose cave dwellings and sites of prehistoric man are collectively a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.

From Périgueux by auto take the N221 direction Sarlat under the autoroute which becomes the D710 to Le Bugue.  At this point it becomes the D31E briefly and then the D51 direction Le Buisson de Cadouin. Take the D25 at Le Buisson direction Siorac/Sarlat.  Follow the D25 along the left bank of the River Dordogne for about 4.7 kms after Le Buisson, and turn right direction Urval.  The château will be signposted.

From Bergerac by auto go through Le Buisson direction Sarlat, turn direction Urval and go through the village.  Turn right and the castle is at the top of the hill. 

From Paris by auto take the A10 direction Orléans, to the A71 to Vierzon and the A20 exit Souillac.  Take the direction Sarlat (it becomes the D703) stay on it to Siorac where it becomes the D25 direction Le Buisson and then Urval.  Continue with directions given above.

From Paris by TGV and train: Gare Montparnasse to either Bergerac or Périgueux 5 hours with change of train in Libourne or Bordeaux.
