this truly stunning 18th and 19th century château in the Champagne-Ardenne
region of France, quite near the Champagne vineyards, the wine routes of
Burgundy, the historic sights in Lorraine and the charms of the Franche-Comte.
It is ideally located for visits to a wide variety of attractions in France's
northeast. The château is situated in its own lovely park of five
hectares, complete with rare century-old trees, English gardens, an artificial
grotto and court of honor ~ a charming estate for walks of discovery.
Also on the grounds are a wonderful heated swimming pool and a sunbathed
terrace for more relaxing moments.
Château de Prauthoy comprises several buildings constructed in different periods of history. The main façade is framed by two buildings from 1721; the grotto, park and dependencies came to be in the middle of the 19th century; the first floor was added at the end of the 19th century; and underground, accessible from the grotto is a cellar from the 16th century. It is notable that these cellars contained about 117 barrels of wine during the French Revolution. The land holdings of the château today are somewhat more than five hectares. A typical project of the region in the 18th century was to create an artificial grotto. The one at Château de Prauthoy ~ the largest of its kind in the département of the Haute-Marne ~ is so realistic that it will be difficult to believe it isn't real, and it is certain to remain in one's memory for many years to come. An added treat will be when your hosts invite you, just before your departure, to a wine tasting from a fine selection of regional wines found in that very interesting 16th century cellar. Guests will appreciate the comfort and warmth of the spacious bedrooms, suites and apartment, tastefully decorated to suit the period in history represented by the château and all rooms with views over the park. The suites have pleasant salons for relaxation and grand modern bathrooms with all conveniences. The accommodations at Château de Prauthoy provide the ultimate in country charm and tranquility. Common rooms include a library, two grand salons, two dining rooms, a salon for television, and a veranda where breakfast is enjoyed. Those who choose to make dinner reservations at the château will truly appreciate the fine cuisine prepared by the château chef, Kania. The château is ideally located in Champagne, but quite near Burgundy, Lorraine and Franche-Comté, to provide guests with a range of things to do and see in a variety of landscapes. For example, in Burgundy one can easily visit Dijon and its fine Musée des Beaux Arts, or Beaune and the historic Hôtel Dieu, or perhaps follow the Burgundy wine route from Beaune to Dijon. In Champagne ~ in addition to the famed vineyards and Champagne houses ~ there are the delightful villages of Aubigny, Montsaugeon and Bèze, or Les Quatres Lacs south of Langres, and the thermal city of Bourbonne les Bains first opened in 1783 and only an hour by car from Château de Prauthroy. The region has so much to offer, and so do Monsieur and Madame Mailfait, your enthusiastic and charming hosts. The château can be rented for weddings, birthday celebrations or family gatherings. Special packages are proposed for bed and breakfast guests, including full-pension stays, organized visits in the region in a chauffeured car, a weekend romantic special for those celebrating their honeymoon or anniversary, and three- to five-day stays designed specifically to your interests - and pickup at the Dijon TGV station!. They promise your time at the château will be unforgettable! Please inquire as to the details of each package. |
