| A
rare find in the Pomerol, Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux wine region is a château
available to rent by the week. Château La Roque de Bas is a
luxurious weekly rental offering guests a sparkling saltwater swimming
pool, a fine hard surface tennis court, and 5 luxurious en suite guest
rooms for those interested in spending a week or two in wine country at
a tranquil yet convenient location. Your hosts are a friendly and
welcoming Scottish and Irish couple who have lovingly renovated this charming
château.
The château was constructed in 1818 of local Gironde stone and is set on one hectare (two and a half acres) of terraced gardens and fruit orchards overlooking the River Dordogne. Vineyards surround the château, so guests will find visits and tastings easily available. The hills of the Fronsac region are perfect for exploring, hiking and cycling. Those who enjoy fishing or horseback riding will find the area is ideal for those pastimes. The interior of the château is elegant and decorated in a refined manor. Soft hues and subtle fabrics are used to maintain both a traditional and peaceful ambiance. The marble entry hall opens onto two stylish salons and the dining room with period furnishings and lovely paintings. The very modern kitchen is a contrast, permitting those who rent the château to prepare their own meals and, perhaps, try their hands at French cuisine using the local produce and regional products. Bedrooms in the château are all en suite and delightfully spacious. Large windows let in the amazing southwest sunlight, and each room is comfortable, while each bathroom is well-appointed and modern. Fragonard toiletries are supplied to guests, and all rooms have a hairdryer, and mineral water. Guests will appreciate the fine Egyptian cotton bed and bath linens which are an added luxurious touch. The grounds of the château have large terraces for plein air dining or relaxing with a cool drink. Lounge in the hammock beneath the horse chestnut trees, play tennis or swim in the pool. Guests are welcomed to help themselves to ripened fruit from the variety of fruit trees or use vegetables from the owners' kitchen garden. Just outside the gates is a fine family-run restaurant for easy dining out. Guests will also have easy access to cycling and hiking paths where they can cross through vineyards and enjoy the nearby woodlands. For those who love to be on the water, the River Dordogne is perfect for canoeing, while fishing is possible on a nearby lake. The surrounding châteaux offer visitors degustations and visits to their wine caves throughout the year. A special addition to the amenities offered at Château La Roque de Bas is a wonderful French chef, trained by none other than Paul Bocuse, who is now available for cooking lessons. Of course, if requested, Christophe will prepare seasonal menus using local produce for either lunch or dinner. He can advise on wine pairings during his cooking classes as well at meals he has prepared for guests. This is an experience not to be missed! And, for those who are really seeking rejuvenation and relaxation, a very qualified masseuse will come to the château to provide massages and other beauty treatments for both men and women. There is so much to see and do if you have Château La Roque de Bas as your home base. Only a short 25 minutes away is the lively and fascinating city of Bordeaux. With a fine architectural heritage, an important history, excellent restaurants, stunning monuments, and many museums and galleries, Bordeaux is well worth a visit or two. Near the Château are the famed wine vineyards and villages of Saint-Emilion, Fronsac and Pomerol, a must see for any wine aficionado, while visits to the unspoiled Atlantic beaches ~ famed for surfing, the largest sand dune in Europe and amazing seafood dinners along the coast ~ are easily enjoyed from the Château. Your week at Château La Roque de Bas will be thoroughly enjoyable and allow you to experience the French château life. |
