Château Soussac

The Bordeaux region of southwestern France is a popular vacation destination, and what better place to stay than the elegant château and distinguished wine estate of Château Soussac, an impressive 19th century château on fifteen acres in the tranquil French countryside of Entre-Deux-Mers. At the edge of the picturesque village of Soussac, the château, constructed in the mid-1800s, offers guests a luxurious and refreshing respite from the stresses of everyday life, and it is a perfect destination for food and wine lovers as well.

Wine tastings and wine appreciation courses are offered and are regarded as some of the best in the region.  At Château Soussac there are 3.75 hectares of vines and the vineyard, replanted in 2003, was born from the desire to create a small clos which would produce very high quality wines.Originality and up-to-date technology go hand in hand to produce wine with a difference. And, for those who appreciate the absence of chemicals in what they eat and drink, no addition of fertilizer or change in organic content was made to the soil before planting. Respect for the environment is always the primary consideration, and the soil was left to rest for a year before the vineyard was replanted.  The vineyards produce three Bordeaux wines ~ Château Soussac Bordeaux Rosé, Château Soussac Bordeaux and Château Soussac Bordeaux Superieur which is aged in oak barrels in the climatized chais at the château.  The harvest is all done by hand, and guests can join in the fun and the excitement of the harvest in September. Château Soussac Bordeaux can be bought by the bottle at the château and can also be shipped all over the world. You can even have your own personal uniquely designed label on your bottles. Guests are invited to join the owners on a tour of the vineyards, visit the cellars and have free tastings of the wines.

The accommodations at Château Soussac are provided with as much care and attention as is given to their wines.  Each en suite guest room has two large windows with superb views of the gardens, lake or vineyard. Lovely robes and separate towels for the swimming pool are provided, as are samples of Phyt's beauty products ~ 100% organic products used by Catherine Falgueyret-Leglise, the beautician and masseuse at Château Soussac.  Guest rooms are tastefully appointed and furnished with antiques.  All bathrooms are newly installed and include a heated towel rail and separate hot water tank so there is plenty of hot water at all times.  Every bathroom has a lovely, large window for light and views.  Of course, a continental breakfast is included in the room rates, and guests will start their days with yogurt, fresh fruit, croissants, pastries, baguettes, cereals, jams, juice, coffee and tea. Guests also have a choice of either the terrace or dining room for taking their breakfast. Five-course dinners taken at the château have menus designed around the château's vegetable garden and local produce from the daily village markets.

For those interested in improving their cuilinary skills or learning more about the secrets of French cuisine, the château offers cooking courses with French chef Stéphane Ivansich who is a pleasure to work with and who speaks English very well.  He was trained at the famed Lycée Hôtelier de Talence and offers a well-organized course including visits to markets as part of the student's experience.  For those wishing to arrange rental of the entire château for a special event, Stéphane will also cater the dinner meals to suit the occasion.  A stay at Château Soussac, whether for a night or two or for a week-long family gathering, will without a doubt be a satisfying and memorable experience in this most enjoyable region of France.
