| Perched at the crest of a hill with a commanding view of the seemingly endless landscape before it, Château de Vollore is unique and inviting. The history of the château will entrance you, both for its ancient drama and its more recent American connection. Thierry, the son of Clovis, beseiged the original Vollore in 532. The donjon (the Romanesque keep) still exists today, the remnants of a fortress built in the twelfth century by the Vollore family. Passing through the hands of several owners over the years, it became the property of the Montmorin family in the 17th century. They are responsible for today's appearance of Château de Vollore. American guests are especially welcome to Château de Vollore. The American connection is represented by Monsieur and Madame Aubert La Fayette, direct descendants of Général Marquis de La Fayette, the French hero of the American Revolution. In the La Fayette family now for two centuries, Château de Vollore is a showcase of rare souvenirs of their family and the American War of Independence. Important furnishings from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries fill the rooms which offer views of the Auvergne mountains and the plains of the Limagne and Dore. Guest rooms are very spacious and well-appointed with rich fabrics and thoughtful décor. Guests may discover chocolates and bottled water in their rooms which add to the gracious welcome one receives upon arrival. Breakfast is served in the dining room or on the terrace at poolside providing the opportunity to meet and converse with your fellow guests over a generous meal.
