Domaine de Biar

We are so pleased to present Domaine de Biar to you ~ an enchanting bed and breakfast on 50 hectares of parkland only a few minutes from the great southern French city of Montpellier.  Beautiful white horses of the Camargue are the star attractions at Domaine de Biar where 25 are permanent residents, and their breeding and training is a primary activity.  A herd of bulls and cattle graze on the prairies of Biar.

The domaine itself dates back to 1155 and is located close to the ancient Roman road, Via Domitia, that was built in 120 B.C. to connect Italy with Spain.  Ownership of the 18th century "Folie" passed to Baron Joseph Bonnier of Mosson in 1727, who was treasurer of the grants of Languedoc and a patron of the arts and sciences.  He began major construction projects on the estate.  In 1882, the domaine became the property of Henri Marès who is known for his discovery of treatments for diseases that affected the vineyards.  He also owned the elegant Château de l'Engarran, very near the domaine,  which is in the hamlet of Lavérune and is a noted wine producer.  His plan was to leave the Domaine de Biar to his daughter, Henriette, but he never completed his work there, and the property fell into disrepair.

In 2007, the current owner fell in love with Domaine de Biar, purchased it and led it through its renaissance.  All restoration work was done with the environment in mind using organic and environmentally-friendly materials whenever possible.  The installation of a sanitation system operated by phylo-filtration, an independent water system, heating and air cooling using a heat pump, recycling and other methods all reduce the domaine's ecological footprint.  Guests will find a closeness to nature here, and will enjoy the swimming pool, solarium, spacious terrace, the spa, or a relaxing massage as well as having a half day with horseman Walter Badet to get to know one of the Camargue horses.  Centuries-old trees, bamboo groves, bassins, green meadows, and the verdant banks of the River Mosson are all in harmony with an English garden and the elegance of the castle.

A large reception hall and music room on the ground floor opens to the gardens, and bed and breakfast guests will stay in contemporary and luxurious suites with balconies offering panoramic views of the vast estate.  The en suite bathrooms are of  21st century design and provide guests with all amenities including bathrobes and hair dryers.  The cuisine is of the highest standard, and breakfasts include local organic products either from the domaine's own gardens or from local producers.  Large scale events or small, intimate gatherings can also be hosted at Domaine de Biar.

Only two kilometers away is the town of Lavérune, a first-century village with a fourteenth century church and an eighteenth century castle.  Festivals and other activities take place here in the summer, and it's a charming place within walking distance of Domaine de Biar. Visit the  small museum of contemporary art or the library, Media Jean de la Fontaine.  The city of Montpellier, France's fastest growing and eighth largest city, is a treasure of interesting architecture, an impressive vast square, inviting shops, good restaurants, universities and the River Lez .  Get a Montpellier City Card for discounts during your visit good for 24, 48 or 72 hours.  This city is the capital of Languedoc-Roussillon and the département of Hérault and the third largest French city along the Mediterranean coast after Marseille and Nice.  Don't miss it!
