Château de Janville

It is our great pleasure to include Château de Janville among our prestigious members.  Located on the Alabaster Coast of Normandy's Pays de Caux, in the département of Seine-Maritime, not far from Veulettes sur Mer beach and between Dieppe and Fécamp, this elegant and romantic château receives guests from around the world.  Set on forty acres of specimen trees, and exquisite rose and rhododendron gardens, Château de Janville is the ideal venue for family gatherings, birthday and anniversary celebrations and that special getaway for total relaxation.  The château was built at the beginning of the 17th century and the two towers were added in the 19th century.  It has received the designation Monument Historique by the French National Trust.

The château has been tastefully renovated by the owner, a former artistic director of Dior jewelry, Holland & Holland and other luxury brands.  Seven of the bedrooms are en suite with showers and WCs.  The other two bedrooms, the Pompadour Nursery and Pondichery Bedroom  are not en suite.  The interior creatively combines contemporary and antique designs with some of the most prestigious names in interior fabrics including Braquenié, Rubelli and Charles Burger.

There are nine bedrooms available for guests in the château.  The dining hall comfortably seats 15 people, there is a fully-equipped professional kitchen, a library, a games rooms with TV and home cinema, a parlor and living room for relaxation, and spacious lawns for outdoor dining.  The heated swimming pool is very inviting as is the 75 meter lap pool (heated upon request).  Guests can also enjoy croquet, pétanque, badminton, and ping pong, and they will also appreciate the architecture which includes two nineteenth century pavilions and the three towers added by the Baron of Sancy to create the romantic castle we see today.  There is also a dovecote dating back to 1781, as well as stables and a gate house.  The Blue Cottage offers three additional bedrooms and two bathrooms to comfortably accommodate 6 people and a baby.

In 1940, early  in World War II, Janville was confiscated by the Germans and became the commandant's headquarters for the region and remained so until 1944 when the Allies liberated the château.  It then became the American's headquarters.  Lucky Strike Camp was created at the end of 1944 for the transit of equipment and reinforcements from Le Havre Harbor to the front lines.  In 1945 it could accommodate 100,000 people in tents around the former German air strip.  It eventually became a transit camp for former prisoners of war and army personnel returning to the United States.  At its peak, five thousand people a day were leaving by plane or ship through Le Havre for America, while three thousand German prisoners of war were doing the cooking and cleaning. Today the remains of the air strip (still occasionally used for private planes) and the camp have been returned to their original purpose:  for wheat, mustard seed and flax fields.

A week or two at Château de Janville will allow for leisurely exploration of the wonderful sights and attractions of this part of Normandy.  From historic World War II sites, including the Dieppe Canadian War Cemetery, to the Bénédictine Abbaye de Valmont founded in 1169 by Nicolas d'Estouteville. Those who stay at Janville will find themselves immersed in history and experiencing French country life at its best.  Explore south along the coast to visit Fécamp and Étretat and north on the coast to Dieppe.  Sailing past the white cliffs of the Côte d'Alabâtre or playing tennis at a club only two minutes from the château are pleasant activities as well.   Gathering your friends and family for a holiday in Normandy is one of the great pleasures in life!  Celebrate a family milestone, an important birthday or anniversary or even schedule a reunion at this beautiful, historic chateau.
