Château Lagorce

On a hillside overlooking a valley, surrounded by forests and rolling terrain, Château Lagorce has the advantage of being located near the city of Bordeaux and amid the famed vineyards of the region.  Large enough for a celebratory group gathering where all guests can have a luxurious bedroom with en suite bath, this Roman style château, some of which dates back to the 15th century, has a fascinating and complex history.  The name 'Lagorce' comes from a type of vegetation that appeared in the early 16th century, and according to a document dating to the 1700s, there was originally a moat surrounding the castle.  With its oldest tower boasting walls 1.2 meters thick, the château was defensible during the feudal wars of the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries, the latter two seeing destruction of parts of the castle.

The property changed hands and families many times over the centuries, occasionally seeing periods of restoration.  Then in the 19th century, the Faux family became successful vignerons planting Barsac and Sauternes vines.  Records indicate that their wines sold at twice the price of others in the region because of its high quality.  The property was sold in 1859 to Jules Beyssac, whose heirs lived on the estate until 1956.  Two more families owned the château until the Holmes family purchased it in 2002 and spent two years renovating the château itself.

They are planning to renovate the courtyard to create more en suite guest rooms and further facilities, but today it is a fine establishment worthy of the most particular guests and is one of the most important heritage buildings of Haux, the local town.  The château sleeps up to 52 people in twenty-one air-conditioned en suite bedrooms. It has lovely salons, a grand dining room accommodating up to twenty-two people, a library, a breakfast room seating twenty-five, and fine kitchen facilities.  Each room is furnished and decorated tastefully and with the comfort of guests in mind, and four of the bedrooms have terraces overlooking vineyards.  In winter months, the château is centrally heated and three log fires are provided.

Pastimes at the château can include snooker, table tennis, exploring the caves on the grounds, enjoying the golf practice area or fishing in the 6-acre private carp lake in the park.  A beautiful medieval French chapel is available to those who would like to have a wedding or renew their vows on the grounds of the château.   A local officiate or an English-speaking minister can be provided.

The location of Château Lagorce is ideal.  It is only minutes from both the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, a half hour from twenty excellent golf courses, and surrounded by the vineyards of the Bordeaux and St-Emilion region.  The ocean is not too far away, and guests can spend an enjoyable day in Arcachon reached by auto in about 45 minutes.  Dining out at fine restaurants will be an adventure in just deciding where to go!  The choices are endless.   As there is an estate manager living on site, guests will be able to avail themselves of his advice, assistance and expertise.  Arrangements can be made for a chef, transportation, wine tastings or tours.  The owners offer Golfing, Fishing and Wine Holidays ~ so there is really something for everyone!
